Viking River Cruise suggested this and it was worth it for our small group of 15
We booked this without expecting much, but it turned out to be one of the better things we did in Würzburg. Getting up to Festung Marienberg is already a bit of an experience, but having someone explain what you’re actually looking at makes a big difference.
The guide didn’t feel like a “guide” in the usual sense—no rehearsed speech, no rushing from point to point. It was more like walking around with someone who knows the place really well and actually enjoys talking about it. We could stop whenever we wanted, ask random questions, or just take in the view without being pushed along.
There’s a lot of history there, but it’s not overwhelming because it’s explained in a normal, down-to-earth way. A couple of the stories about the fortress and the city stuck with us more than we expected.
Honestly, the highlight was just being up there, walking along the walls and looking out over the city and river. You don’t really get that perspective from anywhere else.
If you’re thinking about going up on your own, you can—but you’ll get a lot more out of it like this.
